Overview
The London to Penzance trunk road is finished four months ahead of schedule in February before the onset of the busy tourist season. Costain Civil Engineering Ltd won the £3 million tender from the Ministry of Transport for the construction of the formerly known London- Penzance Trunk road. The Liskeard bypass section of the A38 consists of a six mile stretch of dual carriageway allowing traffic to bypass the town of Liskeard to the west at Trerulefoot.
The A38 is the longest road in the UK spanning 292 miles, from Bodmin in Cornwall to Mansfield in Nottinghamshire. Liskeard has been a settlement since the Norman era, in 1240 Richard the Earl of Cornwall granted the town a Royal Market Charter, since then it has been a location for agricultural progression. Liskeard still holds a livestock market every Tuesday, the Liskeard Lions have held a carnival every autumn since 1976 and the Liskeard show is held every second Saturday in July and the St. Matthews Fair has been held since 1266.
