Overview
Liskeard Show opens its gates to the bucking broncos. Bareback bronc riding as it is known is not considered a regular UK pastime, more from across the water in the USA. Broncs are wild horses that are tamed through mounting and rodeo competitions are considered rather dangerous! The Health and Safety Executive would not easily approve such wild shenanigans today. As for the winner and his get-up, someone has been practising at home!
Liskeard held a regular livestock market until 2017 and its St Matthew's Fair was originally established by royal charter in 1266. The town appeared to hold rodeos for several years during the Liskeard Show. Rodeo which means ‘round up’ in Spanish conjures up images of the American wild west, Mid West and border region of the USA and Mexico, the Rio Grande river and dusty longhorn cattle-drives and bareback horse-riding skills, also the preserve of Native Americans. One of the oldest rodeos in America is the Cheyenne Frontier Days in Wyoming celebrating the Old West. Liskeard rodeo’s broncs have shaken off most of their riders whose sole aim is to stay on as long as possible.
