Stilton Cheese
Can Melton Mowbray really be "a storm centre of international incident" - surely not?
From the collection of:
Overview
In the days before 'Protected Geographical Status' and strict food labelling some Americans from Wisconsin had the cheek to produce their own Stilton cheese (complete with Union flag and Houses of Parliament on the packaging). Peter Green finds out what the people of Melton Mowbray think. With the nickname 'Mr Stilton' you can probably guess what John Eason of the local cheese makers' association had to say.
According to legend the distinctive blue cheese from the East Midlands got its name 'Stilton' from the village where it was first sold, which was then in Huntingdonshire, around fifty miles from its Vale of Belvoir home. The cheese now has protected status and can only be made in Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire or Derbyshire.
