Cornish Wrestling Champion John Treglown
The Cornu-Breton Open Championship is won by seventeen-year old
In partnership with:
Overview
John Treglown a seventeen-year old from Wadebridge has won the title of Cornu-Breton Open Champion held by the Cornish County Wrestling Association at St Kew. Treglown demonstrates the sport for the camera at his local rugby club and shows the champion's belt with the symbol of two wrestlers caught in a hitch. He obtained the Winner's Cup and an award of six pounds. In 2004 the Cornish Wrestling Association became affiliated to the British Wrestling Association (BWA).
Greco-Roman wrestling, freestyle wrestling and grappling are all forms of wrestling governed by United World Wrestling (UWW). Wrestling was one of the 26 core sports of the Olympics, ancient and modern, but with spiralling costs the International Olympic Committee cut the number to 25 omitting wrestling. Along with boxing, it is one of only two sports that still require participants to have amateur status to participate in the Olympics. Non-core sports have to bid for an Olympic spot and wrestling has had to compete with baseball, softball, squash, karate, sport climbing, wakeboarding, wushu and roller sports for a place. The UWW’s bid to include wrestling at the 2020 Olympic Games was successful.
