Overview
The Troon Cricket Team First XI is photographed. In August 1980 Troon plays Ynysygerwn Cricket Club from South Wales in the quarter final of the Samuel Whitbread National Village Championship. Organised by the Cricketer, the Village Cup is open to qualifying teams from villages whose maximum population is 2500, later increased to 5000 and culminates in the best two village teams playing at Lord’s Cricket Ground in London.
Formed in 1875 Troon Amateur Cricket Club is one of the most successful in Cornish cricket. The club is based at Treslothan Road, where it has played cricket for over a hundred years. In 1972 the club was one of the participants in the inaugural National Village Competition, beating Astwood Bank in the final at Lord’s. They went on to win the competition again the following year and for a third time. In the 1970s Malcolm Dunstan and in 1989 Tony Penberthy from the club went on to first class cricket careers.
