Overview

Newcastle United’s shy football hero Jackie Milburn (known locally as Wor Jackie) is with the triumphant Magpies who return from Wembley Stadium with the coveted FA Cup in 1951. Rain doesn’t deter the jubilant crowds that gather again at Central Station the next year to watch the footballers celebrate another FA Cup final win, parading in an open-topped bus with their prize, this time against big city rivals Arsenal.

This amateur footage was shot by Jack Lawson from the balcony of the County Hotel on Neville Street, and is focused on the swarming crowds. The Lawsons owned a confectionary business on Northumberland Street but he was also a director of Newcastle United during a golden era for the club. The 1951 FA Cup Final was contested by Newcastle United and Blackpool at Wembley on 28 April 1951. Newcastle won 2–0, with both goals scored by Jackie Milburn. By the time he left Newcastle in 1957, this former Ashington Colliery fitter had become the highest scorer in Newcastle United’s history, a record held until 2006.
