Wedding of Miss Carrie Alexander, Faversham 1913
The mayor's daughter gets hitched in style in the Kent market town.
Overview
Sir Sidney Alexander, mayor of Faversham between 1910 and 1920, was evidently held in high esteem by residents of the Kent market town. This engaging record of his daughter Carrie's wedding to Mr Stanley Lloyd sees the crowded high street decked out in bunting, a triumphal arch for the occasion and the church thronged with well-dressed guests and curious onlookers. The bridal party takes a while to relax as they pose in the garden of the family home; for most, the experience of being filmed would have been novel - and perhaps unsettling.
Faversham town centre, including the historic Guildhall in Market Place seen at the start of the film, survives largely unchanged. The Alexander family home on Preston Street where Sir Sidney practiced as a GP was then called Gatefield House and appears to have been in the process of being extended; today it's known as the Alexander Centre.
