His Majesty's Visit to His Grand Fleet

Official film of George V's visit to his Grand Fleet at Scapa Flow, Orkney

Documentary 1917 9 mins Silent

Overview

This glimpse of King George V's visit to his Grand Fleet at Scapa Flow is the first reel of an incomplete three-reel official film and shows a tour of various ships, a conversation with Admiral Beatty, a walk past of the ship's companies and shots of Prince Albert, then serving on HMS Malaya. If you know your films but not your royals, that's Bertie from The King's Speech, the future George VI. The King noted "It was a great success in every way, I saw over 35,000 men in two days and the spirit of officers and men is splendid."
