Woman's Day

Help the women who are helping the men!

Non-Fiction 1917 1 mins Silent

Overview

Women sell souvenirs in London's Piccadilly Circus to help raise funds for newly recruited women war workers.

During WWI hundreds of thousands of women took up jobs in place of the men who had gone to the front. In this newsreel item, groups of women sell souvenir carnation buttonholes around Piccadilly Circus, London, to raise funds for the Women Wartime Workers' Fund. Under the direction of the Young Women's Christian Association (YWCA) it provided much needed hostels, canteens and rest rooms for the hardworking replacement female workforce.
