Overview
Sir Geoffrey Charles Hurst MBE visits St. Austell in Cornwall and signs autographs for fans. The England striker remains the only one to have scored a hat-trick in a World Cup final. In the famous 1966 final, England played West Germany at Wembley winning 4-2, their only World Cup win. Geoff Hurst’s second goal was controversial because, although given by the referee after consulting the Azerbaijani linesman, it prompted questions of “was it over the line?”
Geoff Hurst is one of England’s best-loved players. Just five months into his England career in 1966 he made history and became a household name. His England career spanned 6 years where he gained 49 caps and scored 24 goals. Hurst started his football career at West Ham United in 1959 winning the FA Cup in 1964 and the European Winners’ Cup in 1965. He was sold to Stoke City in 1972 and having contracted pneumonia was sent on loan to recover to South Africa’s Cape Town City in 1973. He went on to play for West Bromwich Albion in 1975 before leaving for America where he played for Cork Celtic and Seattle Sounders in 1976. Geoff Hurst went on to manage Telford United in 1976, Chelsea in 1979 and Kuwait SC in 1982.
