Atoms at Work

A fascinating behind-the-scenes look at Harwell's nuclear research establishment and the peaceful applications of atomic energy.

1952 11 mins

Overview

The scenes shot inside a nuclear facility may look like something out of a 1950s sci-fi movie, but this carefully -crafted, state-sponsored documentary is anything but. Its purpose was to promote the work of British scientists and their research into peaceful applications of atomic energy - particularly the use of radioisotopes in industry and medicine. But despite the film's reassurances about the safety of transporting radioactive materials, viewers may be alarmed at the notion of flying in an aeroplane with radioisotopes at its wing tips!
