Spring on the Farm

The exhilaration of spring in the country – blossom, piglets, ducklings and more delights on the farm.

Documentary 1933 8 mins Not rated

Overview

New life bursts forth as chicks hatch from egg-crammed drawers, ducklings rush under a gate – even a kitten is briefly glimpsed. Uniquely, this film – aimed at children – is narrated by a young child, whose endearingly earnest diction is offset by an innovative musical soundtrack featuring a harpsichord. Director Evelyn Spice was probably the highest profile female member of the pioneering British documentary movement in the 1930s. The Monthly Film Bulletin thought this "surely one of the most delightful films that was ever made"; who's to argue with that?
