Shallow Grave
Ewan McGregor and Danny Boyle burst onto the scene with this dark crime caper about three friends and their rich, dead flatmate.
Comedy 1995 89 mins
Director: Danny Boyle
Overview
Ewan McGregor and Danny Boyle burst onto the scene with this dark crime caper. When three friends discover their new flatmate has mysteriously died, leaving behind a suitcase full of money, they have to quickly come up with a solution but, inevitably, tensions begin to develop between them. Filled to the brim with burgeoning British talent, Shallow Grave was a huge boost to the careers of Ewan McGregor, Christopher Eccleston, Kerry Fox and, of course, director Danny Boyle.
Yet it is more than just an historical artefact – hilarious, brutal, stylish and genuinely thrilling in its own right, Shallow Grave exemplifies the brash excitement of nineties moviemaking and would set a positive precedence for years to come. A huge hit in Britain at the time, the boost it gave to the stars and director alike would resonate and eventually bring some of Britain’s most famous films to screen (Trainspotting, 28 Days Later).
