Black Muslims
Remarkable interview with Malcolm X, spokesman for the Nation of Islam, about police brutality against black Muslims in LA
Overview
In a ground-breaking report for current affairs series This Week, Malcolm X is interviewed about his beliefs during a trial following the shooting of seven black men by the LAPD at a Los Angeles mosque. Though the report couches the incident and the popularity of the Nation of Islam in terms typical of the time, much of the film features Malcolm X discussing the tenets of Elijah Muhammad and making his own searing case for reparations and separation.
As coverage of a trial in which black men were charged with assault following a fatal shooting by police, this film remains strikingly relevant. Please note that the report contains distressing newsreel footage which shows injured men being restrained by police.
