Winchester Cattle and Sheep Fair

There are some mightily handsome beasts on show on a chilly day at this traditional Hampshire livestock fair

Non-Fiction 1912 1 mins Silent

Overview

Gaze into the eyes of the handsome, superbly coiffed Suffolk sheep (surely the Rudolph Valentino of the ovine world) on display in this film, and you start to see what drew the crowd on this cold-looking day. As a city of ancient importance and tradition, Winchester's annual livestock fair was a key event on the southern agricultural calendar from the Middle Ages onwards. Though its significance had waned by the 20th century, its reputation still warranted this newsreel story.
