Lives of Artists Not Wives of Artists
Five women artists, including Paula Rego, contest the "hierarchy of art forms" in the male-dominated art world.
Director: Sue Aron, Monika Morawietz and Rowena Rowling
Overview
This carefully composed film challenges the patriarchal hierarchies which restrict female artists' access to the art world. Five women artists contest the "hierarchy of art forms" which defines much art by women as "craft". Paula Rego, Alexis Hunter, Mary Kelly, Flick Allen and Tina Keane offer their interpretations of what it means to be a female artist, interwoven with examples of their wide-ranging conceptual, figurative and performance art.
