Overview

When Jane, hitherto a dependable and predictable Mum, decides to transition from female to male to become James, it sends shockwaves through his family. Teenage daughter Billie goes to live with her father, but to stay in touch she schedules weekly rendezvous with her mother.

James and Billie’s regular meetings are occasionally awkward, pregnant with unspoken anxieties, as both struggle with respective issues of identity, but take on huge significance during a period of momentous change. Much like Richard Linklater’s Boyhood, 52 Tuesdays was shot over an extended period of time - a year of real-life Tuesdays - with non-professional actors working from a script that evolved during the shoot. This intelligent and formally inventive indie hit won Sophie Hyde a best director award at Sundance and was a closing film at the BFI Flare festival 2014.
