Camwell Personal Film No. 44: August Bank Holiday 1959
A whistle-stop trip along Great Eastern lines as we take in many closed and long-lamented stations.
Overview
Beginning at Cromer Beach station, we see signs of railway modernisation as a Brush Type 2 and a DMU occupy the tracks. A familiar sight on Great Eastern territory is the B12 locomotive and as 61514 is seen simmering at Cromer, it has barely two months left on the books of Norwich depot. Withdrawn in October 1959, she had been broken up before the close of the year. We visit the Great Eastern Yarmouth to Beccles line, which closed the same year and take in Belton and Burgh, Somerleyton, St.Olaves, Aldeby and Beccles. With film still in the camera, we also visit the Great Northern and Great Eastern Joint line between March and Spalding to take in passing trains at French Drove, Postland, Pinchbeck, Gosberton and Donington Road.
