Overview

It's summertime and the Purkiss family are enjoying some cycling and swimming, as well as first class cricket. For any cricket enthusiast, the August 1934 visit of the touring Australian side to Canterbury to play the Kent county team would have been unmissable. Luckily for us, one of the Purkiss clan felt the same and brought the camera along. Look out for the players coming out for the toss, with Don Bradman dwarfed by Percy Chapman.

This film also contains scenes of the 1935 match between Kent and Derbyshire at Dover, in which Bill Ashdown scored an impressive 305 not out. It's one of several home movies donated by the Purkiss family to the BFI National Archive, others of which are also available on BFI Player.
