Overview
Weston-super-Mare hosts the arrival of stage 6 and departure of stage 7 of the 1962 Tour of Britain, also known as the 'Milk Race'. Watch elite cyclists power their pedals through the north Somerset seaside resort and see some of them give post-race interviews in what is a fantastic sequence of footage that successfully captures Britain's passion for pedal power.
The 1962 Tour of Britain Milk Race was so-called because from 1958 for 35 years it was sponsored by the Milk Marketing Board. On Saturday 8 June 1962 cyclists arrived in Weston-super-Mare having completed stage 6 of the tour, a gruelling 151 miles. On Sunday 9 June 1962, cyclists departed on stage 7 , 138 miles to Northampton. The 1962 tour was won by Eugen Pokorny of Poland. Stage 6 was won by Ken Hill.
