Overview
Rejoice prudence amidst the Victorian grandeur of the Slieve Donard Hotel. Merry delegates become bashful in the presence of the camera. See any familiar faces as they flock in for dinner? Ulster Savings is part of the National Savings Movement that raised money for the government during war and helped people save small sums during peace. In this film your ‘savings book is a steadfast and consistent friend’, takes the place of the wartime slogan ‘save your way to victory’.
This film comes from the collection of National Museums Northern Ireland. The Ministry of Finance introduced Ulster Savings in 1922 to raise funds for capital projects by Local Authorities in Northern Ireland. Certificates guaranteed by the UK Treasury were sold to the public to encourage workers to save and plan for the future. To promote financial stability the Savings committee aimed to have a savings book in every home. The National Savings Movement declined as banks began to offer more services for small savers. Named After the highest peak in Ulster the Slieve Donard Hotel was built by the Belfast and Co. Down Railway in 1898. It was majestic and self sufficient with its own bakery, farm and power plant.
