Timeless Test

It's just not cricket… Don Bradman and Australia punish England at the Oval in the deciding test of the 1930 Ashes series

Non-Fiction 1930 2 mins Silent

Overview

Billed as the summer that changed cricket, some of Don Bradman's remarkable records at bat in the 1930s Ashes series still stand. As this fifth and final match at the Oval was the deciding fixture it was to be a "timeless test" played with no limitation of time. This newsreel story was released on 21 August as the match was ongoing, delayed by some typically British weather.

Perhaps anxious about catching the boat home, Australia turned on the style, with Bradman adding 232 runs to his 974 total for the series. England's second innings dried up the day after this film debuted, failing to match their opponent's first inning total. The Ashes went home with the Aussies, and the humiliation set England on the path of the infamous Bodyline tour in the following series.
