Overview

The Elfordleigh Hotel was built around 1710 as a private house and is set in 100 acres of parkland. Admiral Bainbridge turned it into the Devon Greswold Hotel and it became Elfordleigh in the 1940s. The golf course is officially opened on 19 September 1932 with the first golf match played between J. H. Taylor, an ex-Open Champion and E. Hooker, a professional of Yelverton Golf Course.

John Henry Taylor was a professional English golfer and considered to be one of the pioneers of the modern game. Starting as a caddy at the Royal North Devon Golf Club he went on to turn professional at the age of 19. He was the co-founder of the British Professional Golfers’ Association. The eighteen-hole golf course was designed to accommodate golfers of all levels.
