The Derby

Gatlee More romps home as part of his 1897 Triple Crown

1898 1 mins

Overview

Often, in RW Paul's Derby films, what's most interesting isn't the horses, but the crowds. This is the perfect example. The victory of Gatlee More will probably be of interest only to racing aficionados, but the conversation that takes place between the white-haired character and the bearded policeman presents a very intriguing little film scene. Their interaction, intimate and perhaps mildly antagonistic, is a highlight of the film. It goes to show that film has always been good at picking out small stories at huge events like this.
