Overview
Living in Llanuwchllyn where their father, Owain Owain, is employed as the first full-time head of Glan-llyn, the Urdd Gobaith Cymru camp, Geraint and Robin attend the local school (Ysgol O M Edwards), navigate the river in matching shirts, cycle the lanes and play football, the game accommodating their sister Nia with her own ball. They visit the Eisteddfod in Bala, and Llyn Celyn, the reservoir created by flooding the Tryweryn Valley, and baby Gwenllian joins the family.
Plas Glan-llyn, a mansion with land, was initially rented by Urdd Gobaith Cymru – the Welsh language youth movement founded in 1922 by Ifan ab Owen Edwards, son of educationalist O M Edwards - and purchased in 1964. Owain Owain (1929-93), nuclear scientist, teacher, artist, poet and writer pivotal in the development of Cymdeithas Yr Iaith Gymraeg [Welsh Language Society] was born in Pwllheli, son of a quarryman. He married Mary Louise Eira Lloyd, teacher and daughter of a Carmarthenshire farmer. After a period at Windscale (Sellafield), he turned to teaching chemistry, art and maths at schools/college in London, Bala, Pwllheli, Bangor, Tywyn. He was deputy director of education in Gwynedd 1977-85.
