Science in a City Primary School

Teachers in Hackney make the most of their urban location to inspire budding young scientists.

School programme and Educational film 1962 19 mins

Overview

How do you interest children in science? It helps to have a great big power station on your doorstep or the wilds of Epping Forest a short distance away. Millfields Primary School in Hackney was chosen as the focus of this teacher training film which encourages the use of group-based activities, pupils' self-initiative and the local environment.

Hackney B Power station began operating in the mid-50s but was decommissioned in 1976. Only part of the building remains today, but Millfields Community School, as it is now known, is still going strong.
