Overview

Filmmaker WKL Dickson claimed that he spent four months negotiating with the Vatican in order to gain permission to film the Pope, all of which time he spent in Rome. While Dickson - a consummate self-publicist - was prone to exaggeration for his own benefit, even the most conservative calculations suggest that he devoted at least two and a half months negotiating and making these films. That's a huge investment of time on a single film project in 1898.
