Manchester to Blackpool Road Race (1903)
Over a hundred Edwardian athletes gather for a gruelling walking race.
Overview
From Bolton Town Hall the competitors set off on the 33-mile walk to Southport in this section of the race, very visibly sponsored by Oxo, a prominent supporter of Edwardian sporting events. The walkers are accompanied by a cavalcade of wheeled transport, including cycles, horse-drawn carts, a tram and a single motor car. The eventual winner was Jack Butler, the boater-sporting number 53.
