Lancashire Factory Gate Exit (c.1901)

A group of workers dominated by women and children emerges from a Lancashire factory.

Non-Fiction 1901 3 mins Silent

Overview

The factory in this film is thought to have been in Mitchell and Kenyon's native Lancashire, and may have been a textile mill. The workforce isn't well paid: their clothes are shabby and many of the women and children wear wooden clogs instead of leather shoes. Towards the end, a group of children hang around in front of the camera and even stage a mock brawl, probably egged on by a showman.
