Overview
What connects Swan Hunter’s Neptune Yard in Newcastle to angling at Loch Aweside? The answer is Renfrew-based industrial plant and boilermakers Babcock and Wilcox. At the shipyard, we witness a 30-ton jib crane going up, built by B&W. At the loch, B&W staff are enjoying a well-earned fishing trip. We also see a family go 'doon the watter' on a steamer.
This is the fourth issue of Babcock and Wilcox’s cinemagazine which ran from 1954 to 1961, produced by Technical & Scientific Films Ltd, which as the name suggests specialised in clear, straightforward treatment of industrial subjects. The films were intended as both internal communication and public relations. They were shown in cinemas in the Clydeside area and on mobile cinema vans throughout the firm’s works - each issue was reportedly seen by 2,000 staff as well as by members of the public.
