Devon/Fishing Net Industry
Recreation rules the day at Ilfracombe, while work continues on Hastings beaches
Overview
From Hillsborough, all Ilfracombe can be seen: Larkstone Terrace, the harbour, Lantern Hill, the pier and a Bristol Channel paddle steamer. In the valleys, tourists take riverside walks. On Hastings Stade fishing nets are woven, tarred and stored in tall sheds. A net is carted up All Saints Street past the New Inn and Shovells, on to East Hill and stretched out to dry in sight of All Saints Church.
This title is a compilation of sections from two films, the second of which appears to be Fishing Net Industry, Hastings, made by Harry Furniss. He was an artist and illustrator who began working in moving images through cartoons made by his own company, Furniss Films. Furniss lived at High Wickham in Hastings Old Town, close to the final scenes on East Hill.
