Bernard Shaw's Village

Pay a visit to the celebrated playwright's home in Ayot St Lawrence, Hertfordshire.

Documentary 1949 9 mins

Overview

Take a cosy tour around the pretty village of Ayot St Lawrence, Hertfordshire, home to renowned playwright, author and wit George Bernard Shaw. Shaw, a nonagenarian when this was shot, is seen at home in Shaw's Corner, joking and acting up for the camera. Many famous visitors came and went (Danny Kaye features here), and you can too - it now belongs to The National Trust.

George Bernard Shaw lived in the tiny hamlet of Ayot St Lawrence from 1906 until his death in 1950. The film's commentary emphasises how the village became synonymous with the playwright, "just as Stratford-on-Avon is always connected with William Shakespeare".
