Overview

This unfussy anti-smoking advert opts for the human touch - intrducing Janice, a 51-year-old woman who can now only breathe with the help of a ventilator; obviously caused by smoking. Unusually, the film derives its strength from an absence rather than the presence of shocking images - the pregnant pauses between Janice's words as she struggles for breath are conspicuously counter to the usual fast-talking rhythms of advertising.

This government film is a public record, preserved and presented by the BFI National Archive on behalf of The National Archives, home to more than 1,000 years of British history.
