Overview

Jean-Louis Trintignant is the mysterious stranger, Boris Varissa, who arrives in a French village claiming to be an old comrade and key confidant of a late local legend, resistance leader Jean Robin. As he ingratiates himself with a sceptical public, it becomes clear that nothing is truly as it seems.

Alain Robbe-Grillet’s piercing study of war-time myth and memory was his second collaboration with Jean-Loius Trintignant following Trans-Europ Express; the actor would win the Silver Bear for Best Actor at the 18th Berlin Film Festival.
