The Goob
A teen seeks meaning as an East Anglian summer and a violent outsider threaten to overwhelm.
Director: Guy Myhill
Overview
Sixteen-year-old Taylor (Liam Walpole), known to everyone as ‘Goob’, is a typically insular teen trying to find his way in love and relationships. Working at his family’s roadside greasy spoon or the nearby pumpkin farm, his entire existence occurs under domineering gaze of his mother’s controlling boyfriend (Sean Harris), who takes cruel pleasure in undermining the boy’s hesitant attempts at friendship and romance. Soon Taylor will have to make a choice between dedication to his mother and charting his own course.
Guy Myhill’s electrifying debut is New British Cinema with a difference, eschewing urban settings for the stunning countryside of Norfolk. In collaboration with cinematographer Simon Tindall, Myhill casts the Fens as a glorious but forgotten hinterland, reminiscent of the dishevelled Americana of Harmony Korine or David Gordon Green. And Luke Abbott’s distinctive, driving electronic score completes the picture of fresh talent giving new voice to British social realism.
