Overview

Factory worker Maud’s (Carey Mulligan) piqued sense of injustice deepens after she’s caught up in a suffragette’s riot, and soon after she joins the campaign for women’s votes. Along with co-worker Violet (Anne-Marie Duff) and activist Edith Ellyn (Helena Bonham Carter) she commits to a movement becoming ever more radical and violent, spurred on by the rousing leadership of Emmeline Pankhurst (Meryl Streep) and in reaction to the increasingly hostile interventions of the state.

Director Sarah Gavron (Brick Lane) and award-winning writer Abi Morgan (The Iron Lady, Shame) trace the story of the feminism’s early foot soldiers in stirring style, noting the women that history remembers – Pankhurst and Emily Davison (Natalie Press) – while pivoting the story on an everywoman whose experience stands in for the many activists whose names have been lost, but whose actions have prevailed.
