Overview

Ian McKellen’s glorious turn as the august detective, now a 93-year-old trying to unravel the mysteries of his own past, shapes Bill Condon’s elegiac conclusion to the Sherlock mythology.

Now a 93-year-old retiree, bristling at the fictional liberties contained his old partner Watson's books, Sherlock Holmes finds himself revisiting the past and his misty memories, while attempting to solve some current mysteries too. This adaptation of Mitch Cullin's 2005 novel A Slight Trick of the Mind brings together McKellen and director Bill Condon for the second time following their acclaimed collaboration Gods and Monsters (1998). The opposite of an origin-story (a destiny tale?), Mr. Holmes marks a thoughtful and reflective epilogue to the annals of Sherlock adventures, combining the inscrutable mystery of the best Holmes fiction with a thoughtful drama on the themes of ageing and loss.
