Town Moor Fair Scenes

All the fun of the fair in this Victorian film, made in the early years of Newcastle's famous Hoppings

Non-Fiction 1898 1 mins

Overview

This precious Victorian film captures the details among a crowd at the fairground on Newcastle's Town Moor: a rotund man touches his hat; a young couple hurries past with their perambulator; tiny girls and boys toddle alongside severe grandmothers. Beneath their feet a glimpse of turf, speckled with the detritus of the day. Known as the Hoppings, the annual funfair still takes place today.
