Critical Harvest

Appeal for energetic city workers to get out to farms in their spare time to help out with the harvest of 1946.

Government sponsored film 1946 9 mins

Overview

An urgent call to arms for city workers to help bring in the post-war grain harvests to avert famine around the world. Young and fit townies cycle out to the country in their evenings and weekends to help with the weeding and hoeing - and there’s no glossing over that it is "back breaking and monotonous work". This film was directed by the uncredited Sylvia Cummins, one of a significant number of female documentary makers of this era about whom little is known.

This is one of many films made by the Central Office of Information to support the war effort and post-war campaigns.
