Overview
This attractively photographed amateur film recreates of the historical journey taken by Christian pilgrims from Winchester to the shrine of Thomas Becket who was murdered in Canterbury Cathedral. The films begins in Southampton, where "many pilgrims must have called", travelling through the New Forest and on to Winchester where the pilgrimage begins. Highlights en route include the chapels of St Catherine and St Martha, before the journey ends at Canterbury Cathedral.
Matthew Nathan was a prolific amateur filmmaker, who created many travelogues around the UK and abroad; his earlier films A Sussex Symphony (1947) and A Surrey Symphony (1949) also appear on BFI Player.
